High Tide in Venice, “Acqua Alta”!?!
Do you need snorkelling equipment?
When the water is + 110 cm, the water reaches your belly-button?
The Media that warn tourist about “acqua alta” are doing terrorism
Venice has become such an extraordinary, beautiful and unique city because everything goes through water
Among typical Venetian issues, we find that everything goes through waterways. “Acqua alta”, is only a high tide, that submerges by a couple of centimetres in a small period of time (November – December), the lowest parts of some pedestrian streets, and squares; only in very rare occasions there will be extensive floods throughout the whole city.
These floods are usually limited to a couple of centimetres of water, that normally can be overcome by wearing a pair of normal rain boots. This is in contrast with a common belief that newspapers and television news show in some images, showing that “acqua alta” reaches the belly-button.
Obviously it is not like this: for example, when “acqua alta” is + 100 cm, it only means that the water is 100 cm above average sea level. At this height, only very few places of the city are flooded. Moreover the “High Tide” in Venice is only a phenomena that lasts only 2 hours, since the tide rises and decreases every 12 hours. To go around Venice and Visit the city during the times of High Tide, you will always find wooden walkways placed above the streets that are sufficient for staying dry most of the times.
The “Acqua Alta” is due to multiple causes such as astronomical tides, the geographical location of the Adriatic Sea, together with a particular meteorological conditions. Tides are higher when the barometrical pressure is very low and/or with a strong wind from the South
